Alamein - MENA
British Ambassador to Egypt John Casson voiced confidence that terrorism will be defeated in the same way as evil was eradicated 75 years ago in the Battle of Alamein during the Second World War.
Tens of thousands of people lost their lives here in Alamein in one of the most ferocious wars in the world’s history, a battle that ended in the victory of freedom and coexistence values against those of evil and suppression, Casson told reporters Saturday on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Alamein.
The land that witnessed a fierce battle 75 years ago is now greatly developed as the new city of Alamein will be inaugurated, he said, noting that the 35 countries participating in today’s ceremony, including the UK, all have a message of support for Egypt and for any project that leads to more peace, welfare and democracy in the country.
They also stand by Egypt in defending the values of freedom, coexistence and democracy against terrorism, which Casson said represents a new sort of evil.
Meanwhile, the British diplomat added that London is committed to cooperation with Cairo on mine clearance in northwestern Egypt.
