Former Chad president Hissene Habre was found guilty Monday of crimes against humanity for ordering the killing and torture of thousands of political opponents during his eight-year rule which began in 1982.

He was sentenced by the Special African Chamber, created in 2013 by Senegal and the African Union, to life in prison.
