Former French Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy has died at the age of 84, the French government announced in a statement today.
The statement said he had been admitted to a hospital last weekend, a year after undergoing surgery for a cancerous tumor in his lung.
Mr. Mauroy served a Prime Minister of his country from 1981 to 1984 under President Francois Mitterrand, and oversaw reforms to trim the work week to 39 hours from 40, lower the retirement age to 60, give workers a fifth week of paid vacation and raise welfare benefits.
