France's Socialist opposition party and its left-wing allies have won a Senate majority for the first time in history, party leaders told AFP on Sunday as results trickled in. Shortly after 7.00pm (1700 GMT) the party's gains hit 23 seats, the threshold it needed in the partial poll to give it enough to elect its own senate leader as speaker next Saturday when the new upper house meets.
