The International Organization for Migration (IOM) launched a Certificate in Migration Governance for Egyptian government officials, in cooperation with the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRS) at the American University in Cairo (AUC).

In statements on Monday, the Head of the IOM office in Egypt Amr Taha said that “Recognizing the increasing importance of Migration Governance globally, and in Egypt specifically, IOM Egypt pooled its capacity building resources to invest them in the establishment of the certificate", according to the IOM website on Monday.

"Through this Certificate, we can effectively maximize the positive impact of migration while minimizing its potential costs on the migrants and society through the provision of a comprehensive understanding of Migration Governance over a seven-month period and a venue to encourage dialogue among all the different stakeholders”, he noted.

The seven-month certificate program was launched on 20 November, with 28 students, including government officials from 10 key ministries, specialized government agencies, and representatives from civil society and the private sector.

The certificate program, which will be taught by accredited AUC professors complemented by IOM thematic specialists, is supported by the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, the European Union, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Since 2001, IOM and AUC have cooperated in various areas, including research on migration-related subjects. They recently launched an IOM-funded fellowship for a full-time graduate student to pursue a Master of Arts in the field of Migration and Refugee Studies at AUC.
