Jaganmohan Reddy

The main opposition YSR Congress Party has suffered a major setback in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council elections after its candidate was defeated in Kadapa, the home district of the party chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy.

The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP bagged all the three council seats from Local Authorities Constituencies for which the polls were held on March 17 and votes were counted Monday.

With this, the TDP swept all the 9 seats of the legislative council. Earlier last week the TDP had bagged six seats unopposed as all other candidates had withdrawn from the contest.

In what is being seen as a big blow to the YSR family in Kadapa, TDP candidate Btech Ravi defeated YS Vivekananda Reddy with a narrow margin of 33 votes. Vivekananda Reddy is the uncle of Jaganmohan Reddy.

In neighbouring Kurnool district, TDP candidate Shilpa Chakrapani defeated G Venkat Reddy of the YSRCP by a majority of 56 votes. In Nellore, V Narayana Reddy of TDP defeated Anam Vijayakumar Reddy by a majority of 87 votes.

The poll outcome brought cheers to TDP specially in the Rayalaseema region, which was seen as the stronghold of the YSRCP. The ruling party workers celebrated the victory by bursting crackers and distributing sweets
