Japan's Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida

Japan's Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said that his government will certainly attend to the reported deployment of anti-ship missiles on Russian-held islands claimed by Japan.

Russian media reported on Tuesday that the defense ministry had installed advanced surface-to-ship missile systems on Etorofu and Kunashiri Islands.

Kishida told reporters on Wednesday that the territorial issue must be resolved in order to head off such problems with Russia, according to Japan's (NHK WORLD) radio. He said concluding a peace treaty is a matter that has gone unresolved for 71 years, since the end of World War Two.

He called it the biggest item on Japan's diplomatic agenda, and said he's eager to promote territorial negotiations with Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit Japan next month for talks with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
