The International Organization for Migration's (IOM) executive council unanimously agreed Tuesday to officially grant Kuwait observer status.

Addressing the 108th session of the IOM council, which kicked off Tuesday and will continue into the next month, IOM's Director General William Lacy Swing heaped praise on Kuwait for the country's humanitarian endeavors.

Meanwhile, in a speech of his own, Kuwait's permanent delegate to the UN Jamal Al-Ghunaim said that joining the IOM as an observer state "was a testament to Kuwait's close rapport with IOM."

The Kuwaiti envoy pointed out that his country's newly obtained status in the IOM would allow it to make greater contributions towards humanitarian causes.

He stressed that a shared penchant for altruism has brought Kuwait and IOM closer together and that the country will remain as committed as ever to humanitarian programs and activities
