Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat on Monday announced a snap general election for June 3.Malta, which currently holds the EU presidency, will go to the polls some nine months ahead of schedule.
Muscat made the announcement in front of tens of thousands of supporters during a May Day rally in the capital Valletta.The 43-year-old prime minister said he cannot risk "unfounded attacks" derailing his government's successes. Malta currently has one of the most successful economies in the European Union.
