Myanmar president U Thein Sein\'s four-day state visit to India, which ended on Saturday, has produced agreements on multi-sector cooperation, bringing the two countries\' bilateral relations, including economic and trade cooperation, to a new high, observers here said. During the visit, which marked the first to India by Thein Sein who was sworn in as a new head of state in March 2011, Thein Sein and Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had talks on bilateral relations, reiterating their shared commitment to strengthening and broadening the multifaceted relationship and to take it to a new level, according to a joint statement released at the end of the visit. The two sides emphasized the need to intensify economic, social and development engagement in order to bring about overall socio- economic betterment and inclusive growth. Both sides reaffirmed their unequivocal and uncompromising position against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, agreeing on enhancing effective cooperation and coordination between the security forces of the two countries in tackling the deadly menace of insurgency and terrorism. Both sides also underscored the need to strengthen institutional mechanisms for sharing of intelligence to combat the menace of insurgency, arms smuggling and drug trafficking, agreeing to further strengthening of border management mechanisms and reiterating the assurance that the territory of either would not be allowed for activities inimical to the other and resolved not to allow their respective territory to be used for training, sanctuary and other operations by terrorist and insurgent organizations and their operatives. The two sides decided to open an additional land customs station or border trade point on the Indian-Myanmar border to allow for the smooth flow of goods generated by ongoing Kaladan multi-modal transit transport project, reiterating their commitment for an early implementation of the Reed-Tiddim road development project with grant assistance from India. The two sides agreed to a bilateral meeting in November to implement a schedule for inspection and maintenance of boundary pillars in the open season in 2011-12. During Myanmar president U Thein Sein\'s India visit, a memorandum of understanding for the upgradation of the Yangon Children\'s Hospital and Sittway General Hospital and a program of cooperation in science and technology for the period of 2012-15 were reached. According to the release, India will extend a new concessional facility of 500 million U.S. dollars\' line of credit to Myanmar for specific projects, including irrigation projects. The two sides also expressed their commitment to enhance cooperation in the areas of science and technology and agriculture, agreeing to setting up of an information technology institute in Myanmar\'s second largest city of Mandalay and another industrial training center at Myingyan next to Pakokku\'s. The two sides agreed to promote trade, investment and economic cooperation in a sustainable manner by holding \"Enterprise India\" show in Yangon on Nov. 10 to 14 and holding meeting between the two countries at Tamu-Moreh and Reed-Zowkhathar at regular interval. The two sides also reiterated their commitment to cooperate in the implementation of the Tamanthi and Shwezaye projects on Myanmar\'s Chindwin River Basin. In the oil and gas sectors, the two sides encouraged the public and private sectors to set up joint projects. The two sides agreed to enter into a comprehensive cultural exchange program to promote cultural exchanges such as setting up of a Buddhist monastery in allocated land in Bodh Gaya for use of pilgrims and monks from Myanmar. With regard to international developments, the two sides emphasized for the importance of an effective multilateral system, centred on a strong United Nations, as a key factor in tackling global challenges with the Myanmar\'s side reiterating its support for India\'s candidature for the permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council. The two sides also stressed the importance of close coordination towards the cause of regional cooperation with the Indian side offering its good wishes to Myanmar for a successful term as BIMSTEC Chair, including its proposal to host the new BIMSTEC Summit meeting. According to official statistics, Myanmar-India bilateral trade reached 1.071 billion U.S. dollars in 2010-11 with India standing as Myanmar\'s fourth largest trading partner after Thailand, Singapore and China Of the total, Myanmar\'s export to India amounted to 876.91 million U.S. dollars, while its import from India was valued at 194.92 million U.S. dollars. Meanwhile, India\'s contracted investment in Myanmar amounted to 189 million dollars as of March 2011 since the government opened to foreign investment in late 1988, of which 137 million were drawn into the oil and gas sector in 2007. India stands the 13th in Myanmar\'s foreign investors\' line-up. Myanmar and India share a border of over 1,600 kilometers.
