New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has established a 24- hour task force to monitor the transition of US President Donald Trump and provide information on policies that could affect the citizens of New Zealand.
This decision comes after the Ministry's officials took a couple of days to confirm whether New Zealand dual citizens would be affected by Trump's new immigration policy.
Brook Barrington, the Chief Executive and Secretary of New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, says he was unhappy with his inability to provide enough resources. He states that he "didn't set up the structures early enough to ensure that we were able to provide the government with exactly that 24/7 real time advice." About half a dozen staff from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade's America's division in Wellington will work with staff in Washington on the taskforce. Barrington says that the taskforce will be running 24/7 operation, so it will be able to provide the government with advice in real time. "I'll keep (the task force) in place for as long as it's needed," he added.
