The Canadian government said that more than 15,000 people have crossed the US-Canadian border illegally to claim refugee status in Canada this year.
Asylum seekers who illegally crossed the US border into Canada this year are obtaining refugee status at higher rates, as authorities accept claims from people who say they feared being deported by US President Donald Trump’s administration, Sky News channel reported on Saturday.
Out of 592 claims from border crossers, Canadian authorities accepted 408 border crossers, or 69 percent, between March and September, according to Immigration and Refugee Board figures.
