Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday greeted Russia's Muslims on the occasion of the Islamic Eidul Adha, Russian news agencies reported.

"For centuries this holiday has been an important event in the life of the Muslim community, serving to unite people and bring them closer to undying Islamic values, and also to encourage a caring and respectful attitude to the centuries-old historical traditions, customs and covenants of their ancestors," Putin said in a cable of greetings published on the Kremlin official site.

"It is gratifying that Russia's Muslims honor these spiritual traditions and mark Eidul Adha. The Muslim community is actively involved in the country’s life and makes a substantial contribution to bringing up the younger generation and promoting inter-religious and inter-ethnic dialogue. Also, its activities are very important for maintaining peace and civil accord in society," he concluded.
