Thailand's ruling military government on Saturday called for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to return to the country from his self-imposed exile to face charges, a day after the former prime minister announced he would not be taking part in reconciliation talks.
"If the former prime minister truly wants peace and prosperity in the country, he should respect the judicial system and accept court verdicts," government spokesman Piyapong Klinpan told reporters. "If he insists on his innocence, he should come back to face charges".
Since he was ousted in a 2006 coup, Thaksin has remained in self-imposed exile partly to evade corruption charges.
