President Donald Trump will announce additional sanctions on Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Friday, but will stop short of declaring them a terrorist organization.
“"We have considered that there are particular risks and complexities to designating an entire army, so to speak, of a country,” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said.
Instead, he said, there will be sanctions “getting at the financing structures themselves and getting at certain individuals, and penalizing people who are supporting these kinds of activities.”
Donald Trump will withdraw presidential support for a landmark nuclear deal with Iran on Friday, but will stop short of killing the agreement, his Secretary of State said.
“The intent is that we will stay in the JCPOA, but the president is going to decertify,” said Rex Tillerson, referring to the 2015 multilateral agreement, whose fate he indicated will now lie with Congress.
“"We’re saying, fine, they’re meeting the technical compliance,” he said indicating that the broader agreement would remain intact for now.
