Jordan will host the Arab Summit in its 28th ordinary session and its preparatory meetings on 23-29 March at the Dead Sea. The Palestinian cause, the Syrian crisis, the situation in Iraq and Libya along with the fight against extremism will be among the most important on the Summit's agenda.
The Arab Summit is held by the Arab League Council in order to strengthen joint Arab action to serve the nation's issues.Prior to the Summit, various preparatory meetings will be held. A preparatory meeting of senior officials of the Economic and Social Council is scheduled to take place tomorrow followed by a meeting of delegates and senior officials to prepare for the preparatory meeting of foreign ministers due on Saturday.
On Sunday, the Economic and Social Council will meet at the ministerial preparatory level of the Arab League Council while the meeting of the preparatory meeting for the Arab League Council' Ministers of Foreign Affairs will be held on Monday. The reception of Arab leaders is scheduled on Tuesday while the meeting of the Arab League Council at the level Summit is due on March 29th.
The Arab League Summit, which will be held at a crucial time and a pivotal period as the region and the world face successive political variables, will emphasize the need to unite the Arab ranks, meet the challenges and push forward to achieve a resolution of outstanding issues and the various crises experienced by some Arab countries, which in turn affected the economic, political and social paths.
The Summit plays also a role in strengthening regional and international efforts in the war against terrorism according to a comprehensive strategy. The Summit will discuss the overall regional issues in light of the rapid international and regional changes, especially the Palestinian cause and means of supporting the Palestinian people rights to self determination in their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with relevant international resolutions.
The Syrian, Iraqi and Libyan issues will be discussed along with means to address all threats facing Arab national security, developing mechanisms to combat terrorism and promoting Arab security and peace by spreading the values of peace, moderation and dialogue, combating extremism and enhancing cooperation and coordination opportunities for the benefit of the Arab peoples.
The summit is expected to issue an important declaration, according to the Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, but did not specify its nature.
