President Mahmoud Abbas

President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, on Sunday ahead of his expected participation in the fifth extraordinary summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Palestine and Jerusalem.

During the Official two-day visit, Abbas is scheduled to meet with his Indonesian counterpart, Joko Widodo, on Sunday afternoon, and to deliver a speech before the conference on Monday.

Meanwhile, OIC Assistant Secretary General, Samir Bakr Diab, said the summit endeavors to reclaim momentum to the Palestinian cause at a time of political deadlock in the peace process, resulting from Israel’s refusal to abide by international treaties and conventions.

He added that the summit will act to mobilize support for the Palestinian people in their pursuit of statehood, as well as to help them regain their inalienable rights.

This year’s summit comes amid growing political tension in the occupied Palestinian territories, fueled by Israel’s repeated assaults on al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem, third holiest site in Islam.
