Cairo - Arab Today
Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit stressed the need to stick to the Arab-backed Palestinian stance of a two-state solution and the creation of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, saying that the Arab Peace Initiative remains the most fitting way of handling the Palestinian issue.
Aboul-Gheit made the remarks in response to reports that the Palestinian side will propose a new resolution in Wednesday's Arab summit in Jordan regarding the political settlement of the Palestinian issue.
Mahmoud Afifi, spokesman of the secretary general, said Aboul-Gheit had told media that Palestinian officials haven't yet submitted the main regular resolution of the Palestinian issue, which is proposed every year to the Arab summit.
The spokesman said Aboul-Gheit believes that Palestinian officials might be looking to refine the wording of the draft resolution but he doesn't think it means a new draft resolution as some suggest will be submitted.
