Al Ain’s Al Jahili Fort to host series of cultural and traditional events

A programme of cultural and traditional events is to be held at the historic Al Jahili Fort in the Al Ain Region to allow visitors and residents alike to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the UAE.

Arranged by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the series of events, workshops and performances at one of the country’s oldest monuments are part of the annual programme of cultural and artistic activities held across Al Ain.

Al Jahili Fort, one of the UAE’s most picturesque pieces of architecture, having won the TERRA Award for its earthen interior design, will be the magical setting of the returning Abu Dhabi Classics as part of its 2017/18 programme, as well as monthly music tributes of 'Memory of the Emirati Song', where Emirati youths pay homage to their forefathers performing familiar melodies from the 50s through to the 70s while singing the words of original Emirati poetry.

The fort will also host 'The Trucial Scouts: Life and Times', an exhibition in collaboration with the UAE GHQ Armed Forces Administration and Manpower Staff Museum and Military History Centre.

Each week at Al Jahili Fort, visitors will have the chance to participate in traditional Handicrafts Workshops every Tuesday, as well as Police Dog Shows within the fort’s iconic courtyard each Wednesday. Military Band Performances will take place every Thursday.

According to the TERRA Award website, the purpose of the award is not only to identify and distinguish outstanding projects, but also to highlight the audacity of the project owners for choosing to use earth, the creativity of the designers and the skills of the craftsmen and entrepreneurs. The search for outstanding achievements deserving of this prize and the associated exhibition will make it possible to generate the first worldwide database on contemporary earthen architecture.
