Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Regional and GCC Affairs Waheed Mubarak Sayyar participated in the solidarity stand at the Palestinian embassy against the decision of the United States of America to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The undersecretary affirmed in a speech that the US administration's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel came at a very delicate time and has caused a great shock in light of the great spiritual, religious and historical status of this holy city as well as the negative impact of this decision on the future of the peace process.
He added that the peace process which all sides are working to revive with confirmation that the issue of Jerusalem is a final status issue whose fate could only be decided through negotiations between the parties involved in this process.
Sayyar stressed that the US decision, in addition to being contrary to International resolutions, would not change the legal status of the city of Jerusalem, which was confirmed by many relevant international resolutions.
He cited in this regard, UN Security Council resolution 242 of 1967, which called for full Israeli forces pullout from the territories occupied in 1967, including Jerusalem, resolution 478 of 1980 which rejected the decision of the Israeli Government to annex Jerusalem as its eternal capital and resolution 2334 of 2016, which rejected the changes conducted by Israel on the 1967 borders, including in Jerusalem and regarded them contrary to the path of negotiations.
“There are many other resolutions issued by the United Nations General Assembly that have emphasized the need for Israel to respect the historical status quo of Jerusalem and affirmed that East Jerusalem is an occupied city whose occupation must end,” he said.
Sayyar affirmed that Bahrain would adhere to its firm stance in support for the Palestinian people’s right to establish their independent state on June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as a capital.
Present were the Assistant Undersecretary for GCC and Arab Countries Affairs, Director of the Arab Affairs, diplomats, citizens, and members of the Palestinian and Arab communities in Bahrain.
