Dubai International Academy, DIA, will be hosting its UN Day assembly on the 24th of October, with Tariq Al Gurg, the Chief Executive Officer at Dubai Cares, as the Chief Guest.
Since his appointment in 2009 to the UAE-based philanthropic organisation, with which Dubai International Academy has been affiliated for several years, Al Gurg has been responsible for strategically defining and leading the organisation, working towards providing children and young adults in developing countries with access to quality education. As an Emirati, he is constantly inspired by the vision of the Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to work towards life changing outcomes every day. He is also responsible for the involvement of Dubai Cares in global development efforts, the most prominent of which is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs.
The Dubai International Academy Model United Nations, DIAMUN, is a platform for students from around the world to collaborate and articulate new, innovative solutions to solve real life issues. It was inspired by the United Nations charter founded on 24th October 1945.
Poonam Bhojani, CEO of Innoventures Education, said, "DIAMUN provides students with a stepping stone to the world of diplomacy. The conference motivates students to analyse, think critically and discuss globally relevant topics. When students prepare for a Model UN conference, they develop skills in writing, analytical research, public speaking, reconciliation and collaborative problem solving."
Tariq Al Gurg said, "I am very happy to see UAE students from different backgrounds and cultural perspectives celebrating this momentous event and working together to come up with new and innovation solutions to global issues. I am confident that this event will help students to cultivate confidence and leadership skills, practice research, public speaking, teamwork, negotiation and writing skills, thus creating responsible and well-aware global citizens."
The assembly will also be the platform where students will unveil the theme for the prestigious DIAMUN 2018, now in its tenth year. Entirely led by students, DIAMUN is one of the Middle East’s first THIMUN, The Hague International Model United Nations, affiliated conferences, and the only one in the United Arab Emirates.
