Foreign Ministry Ambassador Badr Abdel Attei

Spokesman of the Foreign Ministry Ambassador Badr Abdel Attei asserted on Sunday the importance of reaching a political agreement in Libya as soon as possible, voicing hope that all parties to the conflict could agree on the fifth draft proposal floated by the UN Security Council for a political deal among Libya's opposing factions last week.

The spokesman asserted that Egypt would exert all possible efforts to back Libya in the various phases as part of Cairo keenness on stability in the neighboring country and with the aim of enabling the Libya government and authorities regain control all over the Libyan territories without any delay.

In late April, pecial Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Bernardino León announced that that he had outlined for the Security Council his draft proposal for a political agreement among Libya’s factions. He has warned that ongoing “chaos” there has sparked a series of dire events in the wider region – forcing thousands of desperate civilians to seek unsafe passage across the Mediterranean and a spate of recent bomb attacks against embassies in Tripoli.

The draft agreement is anchored in a number of key principles, including that of the inviolability of the democratic process and a clear separation of powers between the executive and legislative authorities, according UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said, adding that this as key to the proper functioning of government and state, and to providing the necessary political guarantees to safeguard a future government of national accord and sufficiently empower it to address the huge challenges confronting Libya.
