Egypt's permanent delegate to the Geneva-based UN headquarters Amr Ramadan refuted on Wednesday the European Union (EU) claims over human rights violations in Egypt.

All of these claims are "untrue", he said.

Addressing a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council, Ramadan said death penalties are set forth in international laws and handed down to dangerous criminals.

He rebutted also claims about forced disappearances in Egypt, saying that those kept in Egypt's prisons are wanted on charges either by the public prosecution or the court.

The Egyptian law prohibits all forms of torture and arbitrary detentions, Ramadan noted, adding that protests are allowed in Egypt according to the constitution.

He went on to say that over 47,000 non-governmental organizations are currently operating in Egypt.
