Morocco’s Head of Government, Abdelilah Benkirane

Morocco’s Head of Government, Abdelilah Benkirane, decided to hold the government formation negotiations on Saturday and stated that he will inform King Mohammed VI upon his return from African tour whether he can form a coalition or not.

During a meeting with the Central Committee of the young members of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) on Saturday, Abdelilah Benkirane said that the state of stagnancy marking the political scene in Morocco would not continue forever.

He explained that a viable solution to overcoming what has been known in Morocco, as the “blockage,” is to run the election again. He added, however, that his party prefers to avoid this solution, calling it “a tough thing.”

“Honestly, I am waiting for the King’s return, because then I will either have a government to suggest to him, and if there is none, I will let him know,” said Benkirane during the meeting in the city of Bouznika near Rabat.

Benkirane added that what is taking place in the political scene is “surreal” and “not logical” and that something must be done rather than remaining passive about it.

Talking about the failed process of government formation, Benkirane said that the state of political stagnancy is “unacceptable.”

The current situation occurred after the Secretary-General of the National Rally of Independents, Aziz Akhannouch, made his participation in the coalition government contingent on numerous conditions.

“This cannot be accepted, and we have to say that this is unacceptable, and we have said it.”

The Secretary-General of the Justice and Development party also stated that his party might go to the opposition.

“The natural thing is that we form the government, but if they find another solution that we have no idea about, we could go to the opposition,” stated Benkirane.
