Sharjah Book Authority participates in Frankfurt International Book Fair

The UAE publishing sector is being promoted on the global stage, through the participation of the Sharjah Book Authority, SBA, at the Frankfurt International Book Fair.

The authority has a major presence in the 69th edition of the world’s largest book fair, which is currently being held in Germany and will run until 15th October.

The SBA’s participation at the five-day literary event, which is hosting more than 7,000 exhibitors from over 100 countries, is part of its efforts to promote Sharjah’s landmark initiatives, which aim to develop its publishing industry while attracting international publishing houses to the emirate and the entire UAE.

The authority’s participation is a follow-up to Sharjah’s crowing with the prestigious title of "World Book Capital" for 2019 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO, a ground-breaking achievement that promotes the SBA’s stature at international literary events, including the Frankfurt International Book Fair.

The SBA delegation is using the event to connect and network with many of its prominent guests, with France being the "Guest of Honour" at this year’s event. The French Ministry of Culture has sent over 130 writers, intellectuals and media personalities to support its presence in Frankfurt.

Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the SBA, highlighted the key role of book fairs in facilitating collaboration and communication between publishing industry professionals and experts, as well as enabling them to combine their expertise for their mutual benefit.

"Book fairs serve as vital mediums, where individuals and organisations can learn about other cultures and build bridges of dialogue. The SBA is honoured to represent Sharjah at the Frankfurt International Book Fair and promote the emirate according to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council Ruler of Sharjah, who is a leading light in promoting the need for empowerment and investing in human resources, through culture, knowledge and intellect," Al Ameri said.

Al Ameri also noted that the SBA stand at the Frankfurt International Book Fair has done its best, during the event, to promote Sharjah Publishing City, SPC, the first phase of which will be inaugurated at end of October. The SPC is the world’s first free publishing zone that provides services to the book industry, and the facility has gained the attention of many leading international publishing houses, which seek to expand across the region and enter its book market, he added.
