H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah has issued an Emiri Decree No (64) of 2017 establishing the Sharjah Museums Authority.

The Decree further stipulates that the authority will be an independent non-profit body with financial and administrative independence and full legal status and capacity to carry out the legal acts necessary to achieve its objectives.

According to the Decree, the Museums Department of the Ruler's Office is hereby abolished, with all of its fixed and movable assets and human resources shall be transferred to the Sharjah Museums Authority.

The Decree is effective from the date of its issuance and shall be published in the Official Gazette.
