Abdul Aziz Al Jarwan, Director of the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, SRTA, has presented statistics on the authority’s operation of various mass transit vehicles during the third quarter of 2017, which revealed that 14.3 million passengers used public transport, or some 20,000 passengers per day.
Al Jarwan noted that the authority is continuing to develop the local transport sector to meet the large increase in demand that resulted from confidence in the service, while providing practical solutions for the public when using mass transit, such as improving bus services for both transportation between cities and public transport, and expanding its fleet of buses.
Al Jarwan added that during the third quarter of this year, there were 887 violations involving illegal operations of vehicles, a rise of 3.8 percent over the same period last year.
Al Jarwan further added that the authority’s Quality Control Department has organised three campaigns in various areas of Sharjah, including Sharjah International Airport, commercial centres, hospitals, event venues, public transport stations and interurban transport, during the third quarter of 2017, while 2,679 traffic violations were recorded, 21 percent fewer than during the same period last year.
The SRTA call centre has also received 220,000 calls during the third quarter of this year, including 135,325 calls to service taxi vehicles.
