The International Maritime Organisation, IMO, has declared the UAE’s ratification of a range of international maritime conventions and protocols, in a step that supports its nomination for membership in the IMO Board.

The ratification took place following a series of actions by the UAE, represented by the Federal Authority For Land and Maritime Transport, to meet the required conditions and standards of the IMO, which it will closely monitor with local relevant authorities.

The conventions and protocols ratified by the country include the "1988 Protocol to the Convention on the Control and Management of Ballast Water and Sediments in Ships," the "1988 Protocol of the 1966 International Convention on Load Lines," the "1988 Protocol on the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) of 1974," and the "International Convention on the Safety of Containers (CSC) of 1972."

Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Chairman of the Federal Transport Authority – Land and Maritime, highlighted the Authority’s efforts, in co-operation with other relevant local authorities, and their commitment to international standards, to adopt the IMO’s international maritime conventions and protocols.

The Authority drafted work plans to meet these conditions and standards, to ensure success with regards to joining these conventions. It also praised the UAE’s overall efforts to improve its maritime sector and create a safe and sustainable international maritime community.
