Raising Palestinian flag in UN

Palestinians' statehood obsession got a de jure recognition as the United Nations General Assembly voted in favour of hoisting their flag over the world body buildings, commented a UAE daily.

"Though symbolic in essence, it is a leap forward in realising a two-state solution. The overwhelming vote in favour of Palestinians reflects the resolve of the world community to address the Palestinian-Israeli imbroglio at a time when the entire region is experiencing upheavals with the rise of Daesh and the like," said Khaleej Times in an editorial on Sunday.

Encroachment of Arab lands has led to revulsion in the region and beyond. All insurgencies in the world have drawn their inspiration from the Palestinian cause. That is why the Middle East's oldest conflict cannot be left unattended, and it is high time the dispossessed and homeless nation was recognised and the occupied territories under Israeli control were declared an independent state. This will be the first and most-essential step in addressing volatility in the region, and subsequently help overcome radicalism and terrorism.

This move has come close on the heels of two major developments this year. First, the Palestinians joined the International Criminal Court, and second; many of the European and Latin American states recognised Palestine as a state entity by opening up diplomatic missions. The General Assembly vote is a major step towards solidifying Palestinian statehood.

"US President Barack Obama, at the twilight of his presidency, has a responsibility to shoulder. He has to ensure that his two-state doctrine sees the light of the day. History is on Palestine's side and no amount of arm-twisting can change the facts. It's time for Israel to trade land for peace," concluded the Dubai-based daily.
