1 Missing as Torrential Rains Pound Southern Japan

At least one person went missing Thursday as heavy rains lashed the earthquake-hit southern Japanese island of Kyushu.
Rescuers started searching for the woman in her 80s after she apparently fell into a swollen river in the morning in Misato town, Kumamoto prefecture, state news agency (Kyodo) reported, citing local police officials.
More than 70 millimetres per hour of rain fell in Minamiaso village in the prefecture, the Meteorological Agency said, one of the areas hit hardest by two major quakes that struck the island three months ago, killing 49 people.
The agency was warning of flooding, thunderstorms, high waves and mudslides as ground in some areas in Kumamoto were loose following the twin quakes.
