Twenty-two residents at a home for refugees in the German state of Hesse were injured in a fire early Wednesday, a police spokesman said. 
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, which started in the cellar of the building in the town of Witzenhausen, and have not ruled out arson, according to the German News Ageny (dpa). 
The 23 people living in the building were able to leave the premises, but 22 of them suffered from smoke inhalation, local police said. 
The number of arson attacks on asylum seekers' homes across the country has risen steadily over the past 18 months.
