51 people were injured, when lightning struck at a rock festival in western Germany

At least 51 people were injured, when lightning struck at a rock festival in western Germany early on Saturday. Fifteen of the victims are listed in serious condition and two were successfully revived, a police spokesman said.

Live music performances were suspended for about 90 minutes while rescue teams dealt with the injured at the Rock am Ring festival at the former Mendig airbase west of Koblenz.

Organisers of the Rock am Ring festival, which is headlined by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, said lightning hit shortly after midnight. The festival resumed later with about 90,000 fans in attendance.

Last year's festival was also affected by a lightning storm, in which 33 people sustained injuries.
