Police in Grapevine, Texas, had found the bodies of seven family members in a flat.
Police said the victims had opened their Christmas gifts and started cleaning up the wrapping paper when they were shot.
They said that one person apparently attacked the other six before committing suicide.
The four women and three men were all found in an adjoining kitchen and living room area when police entered the flat, near Dallas.
Police said they were not looking for a suspect as they believed the attacker was among those dead.
