A boat carrying hundreds of passengers sank Wednesday in the Sunda Strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra, rescuers in Indonesia said. At least eight passengers on the KM Bahuga Jaya died and scores of others were rescued, The Jakarta Post reported. The vessel was en route from Merak Port in Banten to Bakauheni Port in Lampung when it reportedly crashed into an oil tanker and sank. A spokesman said it was carrying 208 passengers and dozens of vehicles.
