At least two people were killed and five were still missing on Thursday after deadly landslides triggered by torrential monsoon rains in remote north-eastern Nepal, local police said. The landslides occurred after heavy rains which began on Wednesday night and continued until Thursday morning. 

    They crushed three homes in a mountainous region of Dolakha district, Rabin Karki, a police deputy superintendent, said. Police and army search and rescue teams have been deployed to the area.  Karki said the landslides had blocked a section of road which connects Dolakha with the neighbouring district of Ramechhap. 

    Dolakha was one of the worst-hit districts in last year's earthquakes which killed around 9,000 people, injured more than 20,000 and left more than half a million people homeless.

    Hundreds of people die every year in floods and landslides during the country's monsoon season, which lasts from July to September.
