Reports said a manhunt for four armed assailants in a vehicle is under way in the Southern Russian city of Astrakhan after the group shot and killed two police officers in the city.


Local police said the shooting incident occured after the police officers arrived at the scene of a road traffic accident, Rossiya Segodnya reported.
The attack took place while the police officers, one of whom was a said to be a father of two, were writing up an on-the-spot accident report.
Police are looking for a GAZel van in which the suspects reportedly escaped, the reports said.
The attack took place amid a heightened terror alert in Russia following the Monday bombing of the St. Petersburg Metro, in which 11 people were killed and 45 hospitalized in a suspected terrorist attack
