At least 16,000 people are killed each year in Mexico by traffic accidents, with total property damage up to 11.538 billion U.S. dollars, said Health Minister Salomon Chertorivsky
Addressing the launching ceremony of the "Driving safety" campaign, Chertorivsky said traffic accidents are the leading death cause in the country, especially among the youngsters.
He also said at least 1 million people are injured in traffic accidents every year, and among whom 40,000 left with permanent disabilities.
He added 90 percent of the accidents could be easily prevented, and recommended several preventions to the drivers and the pedestrians such as using the seat belt and walking on the sidewalks. (*)
