killing of Labour MP Jo Cox

The Union Flag was lowered at half mast over UK's Downing Street in central London on Friday as a mark of respect for MP Jo Cox, who died after being shot and stabbed multiple times following a constituency meeting.

A statement by the prime minister's office said the Conservatives has decided not to contest the forthcoming by-election for Jo Cox's seat "as a mark of respect to a much-loved and respected politician."

Also, Prime Minister David Cameron and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn are to visit Birstall together today to offer condolences to her family.

Meanwhile, West Yorkshire's Assistant Chief Constable Russ Foster said West Yorkshire Police and the North East Counter Terrorism Unit are working together on the investigation into the killing of Jo Cox.

Mother-of-two Cox, 41, was stabbed and shot before holding a constituency surgery in Birstall, West Yorkshire on Thursday.
