Egypt strongly condemned the terrorist attack that took place near the Iraqi city of Hilla that left dozens dead and wounded on Sunday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid, in a statement Monday, expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the Government and people of Iraq, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

At least 60 people were killed after a fuel tanker was blown up at a checkpoint near Hilla. Most of the dead were civilians.

"Egypt is following up with grave concern terrorist operations that have been striking a number of Iraqi cities lately," he said, expressing solidarity with the Iraqi government and people in the face of terrorism.

He renewed Egypt's call for rallying international and regional efforts to face terrorist organizations.

Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack.
