Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani

The US condemned an assassination bid against the Libyan prime minister in the city of Tobruk.

“We strongly condemn the attack on May 26th against Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani in Tobruk, which was a further effort to destabilize Libya and undermine the ongoing UN-facilitated Libyan political dialogue,” Director of the State Department’s Office of Press Relations Jeff Rathke said.

“We believe the United Nations-led process remains the best hope for Libyans to establish a national unity government and to confront the violence and instability that impedes Libya’s transition and development,” Rathke said.

“We think a political solution is the only way to bring the country together. It’s the only solution to the crisis in Libya, so we welcome the efforts by Libyan stakeholders to promote dialogue,” he added.
