Eighty two U.A.E. top-performing male and female school athletes U.A.E. school olympiad mission are leaving for Italy on Sunday to for a three-week training camp after they were selected by the U.A.E.'s School Olympic Games Project following the second edition of the games held in May. The training camp for the picked school athletes in Formia, Italy, was set up on directives from Chairman of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and in cooperation with the U.A.E. Ministry of Education and athletics associations and the Italian National Olympic Committee.
School Olympic Games Project, launched in August 2012 upon the Cabinet’s approval, is aimed at expanding participation of school students in sports activities and discovering and nurturing sports talents, and preparing a new generation of Olympic athletes, promoting Olympic knowledge and principles and raising awareness of the significance of physical training as a way of maintaining good health.
A 27-strong team of administrative, medical and technical staff, and five international Olympic experts, will accompany the school olympiad mission in Italy throughout the training camp between 3-24 August.
Abdul Rahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, Minister of Health, and Deputy Chairman of NOC, thanked Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid for giving directives for the training camp which he described as a launchpad for national talents for achieving Olympic ambitions.
