Palmeiras held Vasco da Gama to a 1-1 draw as the Campeonato Brasileiro leaders saw their 100 per cent start to the season brought to an end on Sunday. After opening with four victories, Vasco seemed to be heading for a loss when Mazinho netted for the hosts in the 56th minute. Juninho rescued a point though with a leveller seven minutes from the end, leaving Vasco two points clear of second-placed Cruzeiro, who won yesterday. Atletico Mineiro missed the chance to join Vasco on 13 points as they suffered their first defeat of the season, 1-0 at Sao Paulo. Luis Fabiano scored the only goal after 42 minutes, though his day was spoiled somewhat when he was sent off four minutes from the end. And 10-man Gremio, who would have gone second with a win, also slipped up, suffering a last-gasp 1-0 loss at Nautico Recife. After having Douglas Grolli sent off in the 79th minute, the 10 men could not hold on as Ronaldo Alves netted in the dying seconds. Copa Libertadores semi-finalists Corinthians continued to struggle as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Ponte Preta. Andre Luis scored the only goal three minutes before the break, leaving Corinthians bottom of the table with one point from five games. Their last-four opponents, who trail 1-0 from the first leg, also lost, 1-0 at Flamengo, thanks to Dario Bottinelli's 88th-minute penalty. Bahia got their first win of the season as Leandro Fahel netted four minutes from the end in a 2-1 victory over Sport Recife. Bahia had led through Pereira Filho's 15th-minute goal before Bruno Aguiar levelled in the 70th minute. Finally, Coritiba beat Atletico Goianiense 3-0 thanks to goals from Fabio Pereira, Marcel and Tcheco.
