Egyptian Christian parliamentarian Amany Aziz defended the role performed by Egypt’s Azhar, saying that the Islamic institution faces serious war during the current period in the framework of the attempts aiming to undermine its critical role not only in Egypt but also in the whole world. She expressed her refusal to any attempts aiming to undermine the Islamic institution or its grand imam during the current critical period witnessed in the country.
She added, in an interview with “Arabs Today”, that she strongly refuses the draft law proposed by parliamentarian Mohamed Abu Hamed to limit the term of grand imam. She stressed that no one will accept any violation against the Islamic institution or its grand imam. She praised the role performed by Azhar’s Sheikh Ahmed Al Tayeb to promote the moderate ideas.
She refuted the claims that the Islamic institution failed to renew the religious discourse saying that the leaders of Egypt’s Islamic institution and its scholars are always confident people, saying that they can perform this role in this regard. She stressed that the Islamic institution exert increasing efforts to control the religious discourse in all over the world, saying that its role is not limited to inside Egypt, while extends to all over the Islamic world.
She blamed a number of Azhar’s scholars for the current campaigns targeting them in media channels and newspapers, saying that they should keep their calm in dealing with the increasing criticism facing them. She also refuted claims adopted by a number of Christian citizens accusing Azhar of defending terrorism, saying that they are unfounded claims.
She added that there is no Christian citizen accusing Egypt’s Azhar of defending terrorism, saying that the Christian citizens appreciate the role performed by Azhar to promote moderation. She blamed a number of foreign countries for attempting to drive a wedge between Muslims and Christians , saying that they will not achieve their objective.
