Defending champion Serbia enjoyed a comfortable victory 10-6 (2-0, 3-1, 3-0, 2-5) over the United States to retain the champion trophy at the FINA Men's Water Polo World League Super Final which concluded here on Sunday.
Tony Azevedo of the United States was named the Best Shooter, Greece's Konstantinos Flegkas received the Best Goal Keeper trophy and Serbia's Branislav Mitrovic claimed MVP of the Super Final.
A penalty goal by Filip Filipovic at three minutes started the hunting pace of Serbia in the final. The defending champion met no challenges from the United States to lead the first three quarters 2-0, 5-1, 8-1. The Americans smashed 5 goals in the last period but was too late to turn the game around with the final score of 10-6.
Serbia received 5 Extra Man goals out of 8 fouls while USA scored none from 12 chances.
"It was a tough game that we tried hard from the beginning to the end. We deserved the victory that we played better and focused on this game," said Dejan Savic, head coach of Serbia.
Greece defeated Italy 11-7 for the bronze medal. In the fifth-place game, Australia beat Japan 12-7 and Brazil romped China 16-4 for the seventh-place.
A total of eight teams, including Australia, Brazil, China, Greece, Italy, Japan, Serbia and the United States qualified for the six-day Super Final, which followed the six-round European preliminaries and the Intercontinental Tournament.
