A truck collided with a microbus in Upper Egypt's Aswan governorate, killing 19 people, including five children, and injuring another person, officials said. The vehicles collided late Sunday on a rural highway near Edfu as the bus was making its way to Cairo, Ahram online reported. In mourning for the crash victims, the Aswan governor canceled festivities scheduled Monday as part of the governorate's weeklong National Day celebration, which marks the anniversary of the inauguration of the Aswan High Dam. About 12,000 people are killed in road accidents in Egypt annually, a 2012 World Health Organization report said. Poor road conditions and lax enforcement of traffic laws are blamed for numerous accidents.
