A 4.7 magnitude earthquake on Friday rattled the city of Christchurch eastern New Zealand. There are no initial reports of serious injuries or damage. Local authorities closed down the downtown part of the city after the quake and asked hundreds of construction workers to leave the area as a precaution. Officials said they plan to check buildings over the weekend before allowing the workers back in to continue the job of rebuilding the downtown area, which was devastated by a magnitude-6.1 quake in February 2011 that killed 185 people. The US Geological Survey reported that the quake centre was about 27 kilometers east of Christchurch.
