An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale jolted 57km E of Shikotan, Russia at 00:00:52 GMT on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 69.29 km, was initially determined to be at 43.7442 degrees north latitude and 147.4283 degrees east longitude.
