Some 60,000 chickens have been killed in a fire in a farm in northern Belgium on Tuesday.
Firefighters struggled to save the egg-laying hens, which perished in a massive fire at a farm in Merkplas, Antwerp province.
Fire chief Jef Van Accom announced that his team was unable to rescue the birds despite efforts to tackle the blaze, Flanders News reported.
The birds were housed in a big shed which was completely destroyed in the fire.
Firefighters are looking into the cause of the blaze.
