Indonesia has been applauded for preserving its forests, which serve as storages for greenhouse gases. The remarks were made by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday, as he concluded his visit to Palangka Raya, the capital of Indonesia’s Central Kalamantan province, UN Radio reported today. Kalimantan was declared by the country’s president in January this year as a pilot project for preserving forests known as REDD. EDD, which stands for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, aims to create financial value for the carbon stored in forests. Kalimantan has vast reserves of primary forests and pit lands. Maintaining and sustainably managing Kalimantan’s precious eco-systems is essential (QNA) OM
