Japanese authorities are warning of another possible volcanic eruption on an island in southwestern Japan.

The Japan’s Meteorological Agency is keeping the level of volcanic alert on Kuchinoerabu Island at the highest of 5.

Volcanic activity continues on the island after Mount Shindake erupted on Friday.

Agency officials said they recorded tremors twice between midnight and 4 AM on Monday, focused in a shallow area beneath the island. They say the eruption seems to have subsided.

Friday’s eruption sent a plume of smoke as high as 9,000 meters. The crater spewed huge rocks in almost every direction, and some pyroclastic flows reached the coast.
Experts said the blast was likely caused by interaction between water and magma. They believe most of the magma that has accumulated beneath the mountain is still there.
They said this means that volcanic activity will likely continue and further powerful eruptions are possible.
